Children’s rugs play a role through a child’s development

Kids rugs have been implemented by children’s caregivers and teachers as fun, educational tools for decades. The reason behind this is a bit more complex then you might imagine, although the reason they work is obvious. Children are drawn to anything which is bright, colorful, and, of course, that they are allowed to touch. Why these seemingly decorative-only items are implemented so often is because they work for children in all developmental stages, with distinct benefits for each. Kids area rugs do not have to remain in the classroom, however, and are available for parents or caregivers everywhere to use in the child’s own home. This could be in a bedroom, play room, or to make a private space for your child anywhere in he home.

Below you can find a precise breakdown of what children in each of the early developmental stages of childhood can learn or experience through the use of kids rugs.

funrugsBirth-1 year: These youngest children learn most from what is referred to as ‘tummy time,’ or the time of day during which they are placed on their stomachs on the floor. Rugs with colorful or starkly contrasting patterns draw their attention, allowing them to find new sight and feeling experiences. This is a crucial part of early development, teaching them how to pay attention to their environment. 

1-2 years: These children learn most from kids rugs patterned in shapes or obvious designs, such as spirals. A second idea would be those with animals or varying types of people on them. This is because these children are still rather limited in what they are able to do or see outside of the home, but are now striving to know more of the world around them. They will pick up their shapes, designs, animals, and other basic knowledge, much easier if presented with it in a fun, interactive way, such as in a kids rug. 

2-5 years: Kids rugs printed with numbers, letters, words, addition, subtraction, specific places, or things are most beneficial to children in this developmental stage. They have begun to master many things, and wish to pad out that knowledge with more specific details. They learn best with something interactive,much as they did when younger. 

6+ years: These children have begun to strive to better express their own emotions, thoughts, ideas, likes, and dislikes. Allowing them to choose their own rug can help them assert their new found Independence in a safe, practical way. They may also benefit in religious rugs meant for children as a way to better learn and interact with their faith, or with ore difficult subject matter, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Children in this developmental stage will better understand what the rugs are actually about, and may even be enticed to use their rugs as either inspiration or a study tool, whichever case may best fit the rug they own.
