Taking Care of Your Cowhide Rugs

  1. Vacuum Your Rug Regularly

Rugs can become easily soiled. It won’t be long before you have to throw your favorite rug away. In order to keep your rug soil-free, here is what you should do:

  • Brush-vacuum your rug regularly
  • Brush the fur of the rug in the direction of the grain
  • Turn the rug over and shake off any particles
  • Do this on a weekly basis
  1. Steam the Rug instead of soaking

Soaking the rug will cause your rug to suffer damage. Steam it lightly in order to avoid any adverse effects. Since the rug is organic, it is built to shed moisture. Even if you think the steam has made the rug go too damp, hand it backside up in the sun to dry.

  1. Remove Stains with Non-Alkaline Soap

If you had a smooth rug, leather soap would have worked. But if you have a cow hide rug, the best way to remove stains and spots is by using a mild dish detergent or a baby shampoo.

  • Use a sponge for removing stains
  • Work the soap into foams
  • Wipe the rug in grain direction with sponge lightly
  • Rinse with damp sponge for removing any residue

Taking Care of Natural Jute Fiber Rugs

  1. Vacuum the Rug Carefully

In order to clean a jute fiber rug, here is what you need to do:

  • Remove the rug and vacuum the floor underneath
  • Place the rug and vacuum over thoroughly
  • First vacuum in the direction of the grain then against it
  • Vacuum at least twice a week
  1. Drying the Rug after a Spill

Jute rugs can be complicated to clean. Should your rug get wet, dry it up with a soft cloth by blotting it. Never rub the spill, you will damage the rug. Vacuum it dry if too wet.

  1. Protect them from Sunlight

Make sure that your rug is not exposed to sunlight all the time, or you will damage the rug in the long run. Also flip it over time to time in order to avoid too much foot traffic.
